TALLAHASSEE WRITERS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE AND BOOK FAIR Held in Tallahassee April 3-5, 2009, the TWA conference included the local launch of the “Big Read.” Tallahassee went with the national choice, Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The Tallahassee Democrat is publishing daily exerpts, and everyone is encouraged to read the book this month. Conference presenters included some impressive names, such as Pulitzer-prize winner Robert Olen Butler, AWESOME nonfiction author Philip Gerard, and former Barmadillo Bucky MacMahon. (Yes, Bucky, I still remember those columns!) Barbara Joe Williams was a real treat with her presentation on mistakes first-time authors make when self-publishing. And one of my favorite local authors–heck, one of my favorite authors in the world–Adrian Fogelin talked about writing for children. I am currently reading Adrian’s MG fiction, “My Brother’s Hero,” which follows characters from “Crossing Jordan” and “The Sorta Sisters.” A portion of book sales benefitted the Leon County Public Library. I’ll try to post a photo.

OLD TIME HAVANA DAY:  After the Wrap-Up wrapped up, I headed north to Havana, Florida, for a book signing at the Little River General Store.  This store is a treasure, as is its owner, Rita.  I look forward to coming back again this Spring and Summer.  Thanks to the young readers (and their moms and grandmoms) who bought my book!

May 19, 2009:
Young Authors Read at Hawks Rise Elementary, Tallahassee:  I thoroughly enjoyed meeting 40 young authors and hearing eight of them read their recently published books!  From travel to comedy to fantasy to poetry, the writing leapt to life as these talented authors saw their published books for the first time.  I hope to participate in more of these events!  Thanks to Susan Koehler and Marci Elliott for making it happen!

May 02, 2009:
BIG READ WRAP-UP: Held May 2 in Tallahassee, this event featured local authors (including Moi), signing copies of their books.  Thanks to the gentleman who bought a book for a little girl, and to Stephanie from Melbourne!  The big attraction was Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Eugene Robinson.  How awesome to have a writer of his caliber in Tallahassee for this event!  I was als0 thrilled to be sitting next to another top-drawer author, Adrian Fogelin (  She is a wonderful writer and a very interesting person to talk with!

May 07, 2009:
Book Signing at Sundog Books, Seaside FL 4 – 7 PM.  Normally, the Thursday before Mother’s Day means the champagne gallery hop along Scenic 30-A.  No such event this year, so the crowds were thin compared to previous years, but I still had a great time, met a sweet Sun Dog, and got invited back.  Thanks, Jenny and Laney!
